Please join the Center for Oklahoma Studies on October 7th at 12:30 for its first event of the 2022-2023 academic year, and find out why our state sounds the way it does. An in-person panel discussion of dialects of English in Oklahoma will be hosted in the OSU Library’s Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room and will include presentations from Dr. Sara Loss, Dr. Nathan Horton, Dr. Valerie Freeman, Madalyn Peck, and Maghin Brewer. Oklahoma is an ideal laboratory to study English dialect variation and change because it lies geographically and culturally between the Midlands and the South. The panelists will first situate Oklahoma linguistically as well as give an overview of the linguistic work that forms the bedrock of our understanding. Attendees will get to hear more about a number of research projects being conducted at OSU as well as efforts to make all of the related linguistic data at the Language Studies Lab more usable.
